Knowledge Layer

The Knowledge Layer is the intelligence foundation Nordic Carbon builds into your Sustainability OS. We model entities and relationships, normalize metrics across frameworks, and maintain a governed knowledge graph - so teams, agents, and reporting pipelines share one continuously updated source of truth for emissions, targets, evidence, and compliance context.

How we build it

The intelligence foundation beneath the OS

The Knowledge Layer is built as core infrastructure in your Sustainability OS - not a data warehouse you query separately. We follow Discover → Architect → Deploy → Scale to model your entities, normalize your metrics, and connect everything into a governed graph that reporting, agents, and workflows depend on.

  1. 01

    Map entities and relationships

We start in Discover: facilities, business units, suppliers, products, frameworks, and how they connect in your organization - surfacing the conceptual model hidden inside spreadsheets and siloed systems.

  2. 02

    Architect the sustainability ontology

We define a shared vocabulary for emissions, energy, targets, evidence, and compliance concepts - aligned to CSRD, ESRS, GRI, GHG Protocol, and your internal KPIs so every downstream capability speaks the same language.

  3. 03

Commit trusted facts through the writer API

Universal Ingestion validates and maps raw inputs from ERP, utilities, manufacturing, and supplier systems. Trusted writes go through the Knowledge Writer API - enforcing draft and trusted state, evidence links, and review policy before facts land in the Knowledge Layer.

  4. 04

    Build the knowledge graph

We connect entities, metrics, frameworks, and evidence into a living graph - so relationships like site → meter → emission → disclosure datapoint are queryable instead of reconstructed manually each reporting cycle.

  5. 05

    Scale coverage and governance

We expand the layer as new sites, suppliers, and frameworks come online - with version history, access controls, and data quality monitoring so the source of truth stays trustworthy as scope grows.

How teams use it

A living source of truth, not a static export

Once live, the Knowledge Layer is what teams, agents, and pipelines reason over every day - providing shared context for decisions, disclosures, and investigations without rebuilding logic in spreadsheets each quarter.

  1. 01

    One vocabulary for every team

Sustainability, finance, operations, and procurement reference the same normalized metrics and definitions - eliminating the reconciliations that happen when each function maintains its own spreadsheet logic.

  2. 02

    Framework-aware compliance context

Datapoints carry their framework mappings, calculation methods, and evidence requirements - so reporting pipelines and agents know how to interpret and disclose each metric without re-mapping every cycle.

  3. 03

    Trace relationships across the organization

Teams query how a supplier feeds a Scope 3 category, which site drives an emissions spike, or which evidence supports a published figure - traversing the graph instead of hunting through files.

  4. 04

Power reporting and agents from one layer

Reporting Automation, AI Agents, and the workspace all draw from the same knowledge layer - so a data correction propagates everywhere it matters without manual re-syncing.

  5. 05

Stay current as data flows in

As ingestion commits new facts through the Knowledge Writer API, the Event Bus notifies workflows, Supplier Intelligence, and the workspace - keeping the digital twin current without point-in-time snapshots that go stale between reporting periods.
